RCA 47 6540 Black Label – Dog On Top

Side A. I Want You, I Need You, I Love You
Side B. My Baby Left Me

On the way to this session after a show in Amarillo, the chartered flight almost didn't make it, the pilot got lost in the dark after takeoff, landed, had trouble with the fuel tank, landed again, and after a couple more mishaps left Elvis and the band in Nashville, safe but in a state of near panic. Elvis arrived at the session on April 14th with no new ideas, so he had to go with what Steve Sholes had brought, he suggested I Want You, I Need You, I Love You, a ballad with a beat, but for whatever reason the band couldn't get it right, and made little progress take after take, the musicians were the same as the January sessions although Marvin Hughes had replaced Floyd Cramer on piano, they went through 17 takes using takes 14 & 17 as the master.
The flipside My Baby Left Me, is very close to the Sun session releases, Sholes had stuck with what had worked in the past, but with having no idea what to do with Elvis, i suppose it wasn't a bad strategy, the only difference in RCA sessions was the drums and piano being added, this track was written by Arthur Crudup and has the same feel as That's All Right, the band jump right into the track and after 9 takes they had the master.
I Want You, I Need You, I Love You entered Billboard's Hot 100 chart on May 16th 1956 at the number 3 position, it remained on this chart for twenty four weeks. The Country chart had I Want You, I Need You, I Love You at number 1 on May 23rd, it remained on the Country chart for twenty weeks. On June 6th this song was number 10 on the Rhythm & Blues chart where it remained for eleven weeks. My Baby Left Me entered the Hot 100 chart at number 3 on May 16th, it entered the Country chart on May 23rd at the number 1 slot and stayed on the chart for twenty weeks, with I Want You, I Need You, I Love You.
